A public service, an overprivileged identity, and sensitive storage may each appear in different tools. Reviewing them together can reveal a relationship that a list of individual alerts misses. The aim is to understand a plausible path and validate the evidence behind it.
Ask what is reachable
Start with the actual network path. Review routing, ingress rules, application authentication, and any compensating controls. Internet exposure is a reason to investigate; it is not proof that a service can be exploited.
Understand effective access
Look beyond the name of a role or an isolated policy statement. Trust relationships, resource policies, conditions, and inherited grants can change what an identity can actually do. Work with the owner to confirm the access required for normal behavior.
Connect impact to business context
Data sensitivity and service importance influence the consequence of an exposure. Keep the classification and ownership information current, and document uncertainty when the available evidence is incomplete.
Close the loop with validation
A useful handoff includes the evidence, affected resource, owner, proposed action, and success criteria. After the change is deployed, reassess the original conditions. Count progress when the exposure has been verified as resolved, while continuing to track coverage gaps.
